A good mow is the single most important means to a healthy Lawn. Here are some of the dos and donts to look out for:

From spring through to the autumn cut your lawn weekly.

Never cut more than a third off the grass when mowing as this can cause more harm than good. In other words, don’t cut it too short!

In the height of summer we would recommend cutting the lawn between 1 ½ – 2 inches. This will help the lawn to retain moisture more effectively.

From time to time cut the lawn in different directions as this will prevent ruts forming in the lawn. The grass will naturally lean and not stand as tall if always mowed the same way.

Keep your mower well serviced clearing out old debris from under the mower and have the blades sharpened annually.


Remove grass clippings from the lawn. As well as looking untidy these can increase thatch levels and prevent new root growth.

We don’t believe in a ‘final cut of the year’ – carry on mowing your lawn through the winter (on a high setting) albeit less regularly, to help keep on top of debris and keep the lawn in order. You’ll reap the benefits with a healthier looking lawn in Spring. Avoid mowing when the lawn is frozen.

Where possible invest in a good quality mower. If you want to have beautiful stripes you’ll need a mower complete with roller.
